Noodle King

We needed to pick up a parcel from the Deptford Bridge area. It was lunch time when we completed our task for the day. Thus, the greedy tummies and hungry eyes are out on search for something to eat.

Pork stir fry with Leeks

I spoke too soon. The wintery and frosty weather is back. Nothing compared to the pile of snow that halted New York and London. Looking up from the valley of Sollér the snow that encapped the peak of Tramuntana mountains is such a picturesque sight. Yes, we do enjoy the view but there is a price to pay (chilly!) for the picture. Read the rest of this entry →

Lemon Melting Moments

My mum told me that she found a rather worrying living thing in her garden. She thought that it might be a small reptile because it was wiggling and woggling amongst the grass (very well camouflaged) and it also stayed under water for a time long enough to drown any warm blooded creature. After few thoughts and family discussions about the vague visibility of the animal, they came to a conclusion that it might be a baby alligator. To confirm their educated guess, my mum started poking around and the bottom of the pond with a long stick, which brought back venturesome memories about her father (my grandfather) when he took us on a day out at the zoo. Swan at the Globe, London

Swan at the Globe, London has a beautiful view of night time London facing St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge (although the cranes are in the way, but with a little imagination one can go a loooooong way). Situated between the Millennium Bridge and Southwark Bridge, Swan is not the easiest place to get to by public transport. I would recommend a short walk along the River Thames (now, depending where you start and what you consider is a “short” walk) from anywhere along the South bank will work up an appetite.

Beigel Bake or Flowers?

Once Jeremy made me angry and I was cross with him, very cross. In order to avoid more friction, I went off to a friend’s place and stayed over with her. It was not until the next morning when he appeared on her doorstep (unexpected to me) with a prize-winning smile, a bunch of roses and a bag of beigels reminiscent of Read the rest of this entry →

Arirang, London

Arirang – London, is strategically positioned on Poland Street, just off Oxford Street, with a sign that is eye catching, even on your first visit you will not miss this restaurant. Many people (even native Koreans) have recommended this place and in turn, become regulars. Even with such praise, this place has not grab my attention in the past six years being in London. Melting Moments

My mum’s melting moments are the best! As a career mum, she cooks and bakes on occasional weekends except for the four weeks coming up to Chinese New Year, the kitchen exists solely for the purpose of intense baking. Our kitchen provided enough cookies, sweets and cakes not only for our household, but at the same time for my grandparents, not to mention  her in-laws… some of my mum’s friends and office colleagues… and the neighbours… and just enough for my little school friends and I. Chinese Cricket Club, London

I think I have found my choice of Chinese restaurant in London. I am slightly embarrassed when people ask me to name my preferred Chinese restaurant. In concurrence with my ethnicity, it seems almost unbelievable to anyone that I do not have a favourite Chinese restaurant. It is London we are in and Chinese is definitely one of the nation’s favourite cuisines and yet I can hardly recommend one. Read the rest of this entry →

Swedish Apple Cake

I remember trying to learn cooking from my grandmother. It is rather challenging to be able to get the specific amount of ingredients that she magically sprinkles into her dishes. Each time when I ask her “how much?”, she replies, “just enough”, which is not good enough for me. I am so metrical! I want to churn the exact taste when I replicate the dish.  Each time I stood diligently at the same spot in the kitchen by her side with my notepad and pen like a student attending a lecture class, ready to take notes. “Put the stationery away and look”, she says. Even so, it is no easy task. After so many years spent with her in the kitchen, I like to think that I could cook like her. Read the rest of this entry →

Chicken Teriyaki

Sushi, sashimi, nigiri, teriyaki, miso, ramen, donburi, tempura – to name a few, are widely known Japanese cuisine names used within the English vocabulary. The artwork of the sushi chef on the raw seafood presented elegantly and admirably before my eyes, is almost too precious to be eaten. However, there is much more to Japanese food than sushi or sashimi. Alongside the elegant flare is the humble bowl of rice and the heritage of simple country cooking. Read the rest of this entry →
