Celler Sa Premsa, Palma de Mallorca

Celler Sa Premsa is tucked away in a corner on the edge of the centre of Palma. It is surrounded by quite a number of government offices. During Franco’s regime in Spain, Sa Premsa was opened to deliver a simple and nutritious meal to cater for office workers.

The restaurant celebrated their 50 anniversary in 2008. The interior retains the traditional and rustic atmosphere of a wine cellar (as it’s name Cellar Sa Premsa suggests) very typical of Mallorquin restaurants. Still standing solidly, busy with tourists, locals and us (not just office workers), it is a good reason to dine in.

The waiters are friendly and polite. Their input throughout the meal was minimal and yet there is no doubt that they are very aware and attentive to our needs. No unnecessary entertainment or small talk needed. The food and the company was sufficient. The smoking and non smoking area is properly divided into two rooms.

“Menu del dia” at €11.75 (IVA included), three course meal with water and bread included is a real bargain. The choices are many, to name a few: First course – paella mixta, chickpeas, salad, tumbet, fiduea, consommé, sopa mallorquin. Second course – escalope, beef steak, chicken, rabbit with onions, “frito mallorquin”, baby octopus; dessert – apples on puff pastry, flan, fruit salad, ice-cream, tiramisu.

The a la carte menu offers most of the dishes included in the “menu del dia” and varieties including french omelette, spanish potato omelette, fried eggs, pa amb oli, caragols (snails), artichokes with vinegar, king size asparagus with mayonnaise, trampo with choice of fish, bistec, veal escalope, entrecot, suckling pig, sirloin steak, roast leg of lamb, tongue with capers, grilled fishes, prawns, fish croquettes, mussels……

The choice of “menu del dia”….

Chickpeas with paprika and ajillo

Escalope and fries

The place is operated on the principal of serving good food and value for money. And in their case, they are indeed doing very well delivering a basic and hearty meal. No doubt that we will return soon.
