Wan Chai Corner, Gerrard Street

Wan Chai Corner, Gerrard Street – London’s China Town, boasts many restaurants serving dim sum. Wan Chai Corner serves more or less the usual common dim sum dishes, as well as the chef’s speciality. Therefore, following Helen’s (World Foodie Guide) advice, “if you do find a good dim sum place, stick to it”, for a very long time, my husband and I have been going back to our favourite place (before I started blogging). We went back almost every weekend to feed our dim sum craving. After six months away from London, we were both looking forward to go back there. I could even telepathically read Jeremy’s mind as he began to think of the dishes that we would have. Unfortunately we found that in our absence (perhaps due to our absence), our favourite place had closed down, so we had to look for somewhere new.

Wan Chai Corner, situated at the top of Gerrard Street (the end nearest to Leicester Square Underground) is a relative newcomer. We both agreed to give it a try.

Baby Octopus Marinated in Thai Chili Sauce with pickled vegetables – it is not a typical dim sum dish but it is my favourite. The sweet and sour taste, which I guess gives the Thai flavour to this dish is very mild and after a few bites, my taste buds gained immunity to the taste.

BBQ Pork Char Siew Cheong Fun – slightly salty otherwise which overpowers the BBQ pork flavour.

PA080065a

Mixed Meat Dumplings – minced meat was quite large and the filling was not enough. It also has very similar taste to the dumplings.

PA080064a

Prawn and Chives Dumplings – no distinctive prawn taste, very similar to the other dim sum.

PA080062a

Mixed Meat Yam Croquette – good yam taste, but the meat was rather tasteless and gooey.

Egg Tarts – pastry was crisp but the filling was too sweet.

There is nothing special about the dim sum dishes. In fact the taste of most of them are very similar. The chili oil is a very dark grim red, other than crunchiness of the minced mixture, is hardly at all spicy. The only competitive advantage for this place is for its location and that the prices are very reasonable in London. Prices range from £2.00 to £4.00.
