Chip + Fish, Westfield Stratford

Chip + Fish, Westfield Stratford – I look rather confused and wonder if it means that the fish is a side order to the chips. Obviously not. Perhaps their motive is to try to change the way of the normal saying, fish and chips. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that that would take a rather LOOOOONG time before anyone gets accustomed to saying chip and fish naturally.

Brits love their potatoes especially in the form when they are deed fried – chips. Whether it is triple-, double- or single-cooked chips, depending on the kind of establishment you are savouring these chips, it is sort of part of an everyday diet for them. A little more culinary imagination extends to sandwich chips, curry on chips (a habit my dear sister picked up during her university student days in Liverpool), and I am sure there are more to it. Less than a week to the Olympic 2012, quite a handful of people that I know have flown to England in preparation for the games. No, they are not athletes but  loves sports and say that watching the games on television in their comfortable homes is just not enough. The ambiance of such could not be fulfilled. I agree. Plus, there is always fish and chips! I say, just do not be fooled that the chips on the Olympic site is the same chips as your local Macdonald’s (having flown 14 hours on the plane). Why? Because, MacDonald’s owns the right to be the only chips provider on the Olympic site. A monopoly by a multinational fast food chain? How? Why? Must be a parody! Sadly, it’s true.

Sorry, got slightly politically adrift there. Back to the Chip + Fish.
Chip + Fish is a stand that sits towards the end of the World Food Court in Westfield, Stratford. It is near the indoor platform viewing area. On a sunny day, sunlight pours in through those enormous glass windows, making the place look so oh, so friendly that you could even forgive yourself to having more chips without feeling the guilt of eating too much fried food. Actually, that does not work. Anyway, standing in this viewing area, I also wonder why the Chip + Fish’s chips do not exude smell like the normal chip shop in the neighbourhood.

Naturally, I compare any fish and chips stall/restaurant to my dear local chippy (Alan’s @ Poplar). I have yet to think anyone that could beat them. And anyone who knows them will know what I mean. Their portion of chips is unbeatable!

Steering back to Chip + Fish again. Apart from battered fish and chips, they also sell pies, Pukka Pies, they boast. “Pie of the day” with chips is a good portion for GBP 4.00. Extra sides ranges between GBP 1.50 – GBP 2.00 which would buy you butter and bread, green salad, onion rings, mushy peas and chips. Main dishes (serves with chips and mushy peas) options are scampi, tiger prawns fishes such as cod and haddock (line caught) cost from GBP 8.00. Smaller bites such as fried calamari rings and fish cakes come at GBP 4.00, and for GBP 2.50 there’s that northerners favourite, the chip butty. If you have got a sweet tooth, they sell a bag of sweets for GBP 0.90.
