Kopitiam

This is not the first kopitiam around. The unique characteristic of this place is that it is pioneered by  the first Malaysian resident in Illes Balears.

Husband and wife team offering a small menu of home cooked food from regions in Asia.

Wife – loves baking but understand that dessert comes after a proper meal, supported by:

Husband – wine lover; extensive knowledge in the varieties of grapes and their mixture. Still very humble when questioned about his passion and knowledge about wine, he always says, “I just know what I like”.

For smaller bites throughout the day sandwiches, baguettes and cakes are nonetheless tempting.

Simply Fosh (Revisit – May 2010)

Simply Fosh, Palma – The interior decoration has retained it’s contempory concept; minimal and simple. The ambience, filled in with a variation of Latin American music and jazz. Recently, Simply Fosh published their new menu. We knew we loved it there before, plus we have a good reason for a small celebration, therefore we return for another gourmet meal.

Ca’n Gata

After the Firó, days are back to normal buzzling but peaceful lifestyle. Last week’s write up about Ca’n Gata was when they had their special menu with snails but on any other day, it is the menu del dia. Three course meal for prices starting from €9.75 including bread, olives, wine and water. For each course there are two options except for their dessert which has a slightly larger choice. Between the both of us, we had the more expensive menu, €11.75, and an additional starter. Read the rest of this entry →

És Firó in Sóller

It is traditional to have snails before the Firó. It is not possible to avoid this festival when you are in Sóller. Everyone is getting ready for the ‘war’; equipped with fake swords and ancient blunderbusses, harmless but dreadfully loud fireworks and dressed in their best tailor-made farmer’s costumes (which will probably be ruined during the battle). Celler Sa Premsa, Palma de Mallorca

Celler Sa Premsa is tucked away in a corner on the edge of the centre of Palma. It is surrounded by quite a number of government offices. During Franco’s regime in Spain, Sa Premsa was opened to deliver a simple and nutritious meal to cater for office workers.

The restaurant celebrated their 50 anniversary in 2008. The interior retains the traditional and rustic atmosphere of a wine cellar (as it’s name Cellar Sa Premsa suggests) very typical of Mallorquin restaurants. Still standing solidly, busy with tourists, locals and us (not just office workers), it is a good reason to dine in.

La Vila (Revisited – April 2010)

La Vila, Soller has been known to be consistently good. The menu has been the same for as long as I know. For the fresh beginning in 2010, La Vila is opening without their former head chef, Luca Dalla Torre. After carving a reputation for himself here for the past three years, he has bravely become an entrepreneur with managing his own restaurant in the Port of Soller, due to be opened in May. Their menu proposed a change. Retained (I guess), some of their popular dishes and also incorporated a new degustacion.

Es Vergeret

Cala Tuent, north west of Mallorca, also known for being at the heart of the Tramuntana range and near to the Lluc Monestry, with mountainous views (of the mountain or from the mountain) has attracted many excursions of holiday walkers to the island. No tour buses are allowed down on to the bay, reassuring that the natural charm has not been harmed (yet!).  Es Vergeret, a restaurant situated above the bay,

Noodle King

We needed to pick up a parcel from the Deptford Bridge area. It was lunch time when we completed our task for the day. Thus, the greedy tummies and hungry eyes are out on search for something to eat.

Lemon Melting Moments

My mum told me that she found a rather worrying living thing in her garden. She thought that it might be a small reptile because it was wiggling and woggling amongst the grass (very well camouflaged) and it also stayed under water for a time long enough to drown any warm blooded creature. After few thoughts and family discussions about the vague visibility of the animal, they came to a conclusion that it might be a baby alligator. To confirm their educated guess, my mum started poking around and the bottom of the pond with a long stick, which brought back venturesome memories about her father (my grandfather) when he took us on a day out at the zoo. Swan at the Globe, London

Swan at the Globe, London has a beautiful view of night time London facing St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge (although the cranes are in the way, but with a little imagination one can go a loooooong way). Situated between the Millennium Bridge and Southwark Bridge, Swan is not the easiest place to get to by public transport. I would recommend a short walk along the River Thames (now, depending where you start and what you consider is a “short” walk) from anywhere along the South bank will work up an appetite.
